肩
かた · kata · JLPT N3 · noun
shoulder
💪 Carry a katana on your kata, your shoulder
Kata sounds like the start of katana, and a sword is carried on the shoulder. In the kanji, 月 at the bottom is the flesh/body radical (肉月), and the 戸-like shape on top is an old drawing of the shoulder joint.
肩 — 户 (door) on top + 月 (flesh/meat) below
肩 means 'shoulder.' The bottom 月 is the flesh radical, marking it as a body part. The top originally depicted the rounded shape of a shoulder joint, later standardized as 户. Together they show a fleshy, hinged body part — the shoulder.
