🧶 糸 (thread) + 宿 (shuku): shrink like wet silk thread = 縮める, to shrink

The 糸 radical marks fibres, and wet cloth tends to shrink. 縮 reads shuku, the same as 宿, while ちぢめる is the native verb for making something shorter.
