給料

きゅうりょう · kyuuryou · JLPT N3 · noun

wage

給料 — wage

💴 給料 = supply (給) + fee (料): the fee your employer supplies you

給 means to give or supply, as in 供給 (supply). 料 means a fee or charge, as in 料金 (fare). Together they mean the fee paid out to you regularly, which is your salary. Kyuuryou sounds a bit like cure-your-woes, which payday does.

料 — rice 米 + dipper 斗
料 combines 米 (rice/grain) with 斗 (a measuring dipper), depicting the act of measuring out grain. From this concrete sense it extended to 'to measure, estimate, anticipate' and to 'materials' (things measured out for use), as in 材料 'materials' and 预料 'to anticipate'.
