結果

けっか · kekka · JLPT N3 · noun

consequence

🪢🍎 結果 = tie + fruit: what the blossom sets into in the end is the result

結 means to tie or bind, and 果 means fruit, like the outcome in 因果, cause and effect. On a tree, the flower sets fruit at the end, so the fruit is what comes of it. Kekka also opens like the English word consequence.

果 — fruit shape 田-like top + tree 木
果 is a pictograph: early forms show a tree (木) with round fruit hanging on its branches, later stylized into the 田-like top. Its original meaning was 'fruit', which extended to 'result, outcome' — the fruit of an action — and to 'resolute, decisive'.
