素晴らしい
すばらしい · subarashii · JLPT N4 · i-adj
wonderful
⭐ Sounds like Subaru-shii: Subaru, the star cluster, is wonderful
Subarashii starts just like Subaru, the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster (and the car brand with stars on its badge). Say Subaru, swap the final u for a, add shii: suba-ra-shii = wonderful, stellar.
素 — silk 糸 + sheng 𠂹 (hanging threads)
Originally depicted raw, undyed silk hanging to dry, with the silk radical 糸 below and strands above. From this came the meaning 'plain, unadorned, white,' then extended to 'basic element' or 'plain/simple' in general. The 'vegetarian' sense developed later from the idea of plain, unembellished food.
晴 — sun 日 + blue/clear 青
晴 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left element 日 (sun) gives the meaning — clear, sunny weather — while 青 (qīng) on the right supplies the sound. It originally referred to a sky cleared of rain, and still means 'clear/fine weather' today.
