粗末

そまつ · somatsu · JLPT N3 · na-adj

humble

🍚 粗末 = coarse + scraps: rough leftovers, nothing fancy

粗 means coarse or rough, and 末 means the tip or the leftover bits. Hosts say お粗末さまでした after a meal, roughly 'it was a humble spread'. The same word can also mean treating something carelessly, as in 粗末にする.

粗 — rice 米 + crude/rough 且
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left 米 (rice) hints at the meaning, since unhulled or coarsely milled rice is rough and grainy. The right 且 supplies the sound. From 'coarse rice' the meaning extended to 'thick, rough, crude' in general.

末 — tree 木 with extended top stroke marking the tip
末 is an indicative character: it shows the tree 木 with an emphasized horizontal line near the top to point at the treetop, the 'tip' or 'end' of the branches. From this concrete sense it extended to mean 'end,' 'final,' or 'minor/trivial' (as opposed to the root 本).
