立てる

たてる · tateru · JLPT N4 · verb-ichidan

to stand up

🚩 立 = stand; 立つ stands itself, 立てる stands something else up

The kanji 立 means stand. 立つ (tatsu) is intransitive: something stands. Swap the ending to -eru and it becomes transitive: you stand something up, such as a flag, a pole or a sign. Many pairs work this way: 開く/開ける, 付く/付ける.

立 — person standing on ground (大 over 一)
Pictograph of a person standing with arms outstretched on the ground line below. The original oracle bone form clearly shows a frontal human figure planted on the earth. The core meaning 'to stand' extended to 'establish, set up, erect.'
