移転

いてん · iten · JLPT N2 · noun

moving

🚚📦 移転 = shift + roll over: a business rolls over to a new address

移 (i) means to shift or move, as in 移動 (movement). 転 (ten) means to roll or turn, as in 自転車 (bicycle). Together they mean to shift and roll somewhere new, so 移転 is used when an office, shop or business moves to a new location.

移 — grain 禾 + many 多
Originally a semantic-phonetic compound: 禾 (grain) gives the meaning and 多 (duō) suggested the sound in Old Chinese. It first referred to transplanting rice seedlings, then broadened to mean 'to move, shift, or relocate' in general.
