禁止

きんし · kinshi · JLPT N3 · noun

ban

🛑 禁 forbid + 止 stop = forbidden, stop: a ban

禁 is 林 (forest) over 示 (altar): a sacred grove that people were forbidden to enter. 止 means stop, as on Japanese road signs (止まれ). Forbid plus stop gives a prohibition. You will often see 禁止 on signs, as in 駐車禁止 (no parking).

止 — pictograph of a foot/toe
止 originally depicted a human foot with toes, shown as a footprint on the ground. From this concrete image of a foot it came to mean 'to stop' or 'halt' — the place where a step ends. It also serves as a component in many characters relating to feet, walking, or stopping, such as 步 and 正.
