神

かみ · kami · JLPT N3 · noun

god

神 — god

⛩️ 神 = altar 礻 + lightning 申: what you pray to at the altar

The left part 礻 is the altar radical, found in kanji about worship. 申 started out as a drawing of a lightning bolt, which people took as a sign from heaven. Put the altar and the lightning together and you get kami, a god or spirit.

神 — 示 (altar/spirit) + 申 (lightning, phonetic)
神 combines 示, depicting an altar associated with rituals and spirits, with 申, originally a pictograph of lightning streaking across the sky. Ancient people saw lightning as a manifestation of divine power, so 申 contributes both sound and the idea of awe-inspiring force. Together they mean 'spirit' or 'god'.
