礼儀

れいぎ · reigi · JLPT N3 · noun

etiquette

🙇 礼儀 = bow/thanks (礼 rei) + ceremony (儀 gi): the ritual of politeness

礼 (rei) is the bow in お礼 (thanks) and 礼 as a bow. 儀 (gi) means ceremony or rite, as in 儀式 (gishiki). Put them together and you get the rituals of respect: manners and etiquette. 礼儀正しい means well-mannered.

礼 — 示 (altar/ritual) + 乚 (simplified from 豊)
Originally 禮, showing 示 (altar) beside 豊 (a ritual vessel of grain), depicting offerings made at a shrine. The character meant religious ceremony, then broadened to social rites, courtesy, and gifts. The simplified form 礼 keeps 示 and replaces 豊 with the abbreviated 乚.
