碑

ひ · hi · JLPT N3 · noun

inscription

🪦 碑 = 石 stone + 卑 (read hi): a stone that says hi to every passerby

The left part 石 means stone. The right part 卑 is also read ひ, so it gives the kanji its sound. A 碑 is a stone with words carved on it, like 記念碑 (kinenhi), a memorial monument.

碑 — stone 石 + low/humble 卑 (phonetic)
碑 is a semantic-phonetic compound: 石 'stone' gives the meaning, while 卑 (bēi) supplies the sound. Originally it referred to upright stones used at graves or palaces to tether animals or mark events; it later came to mean an inscribed stone tablet or monument.
