📚🧠 知識 = know + discern: knowing something well enough to tell it apart
知 (chi) means to know, as in 知る shiru. 識 (shiki) means to discern or recognise, as in 意識 ishiki, awareness. Put together, knowledge is what you know plus what you can tell apart.
