目立つ

めだつ · medatsu · JLPT N2 · verb-godan

to stand out

🚩 目 eye + 立つ stand up = something that stands up to the eye, so it catches everyone's gaze

目 (eye) and 立つ (to stand up) combine into 目立つ. Use it for anything that rises above its surroundings and draws the eye, like a bright red jacket in a crowd of grey coats.

立 — person standing on ground (大 over 一)
Pictograph of a person standing with arms outstretched on the ground line below. The original oracle bone form clearly shows a frontal human figure planted on the earth. The core meaning 'to stand' extended to 'establish, set up, erect.'
