のぼる · noboru · JLPT N5 · verb-godan

to climb

🧗⛰️ noboru: NO BOReDom when you climb — always up

登 = 癶 (two feet stepping apart) + 豆 (originally a raised stand): feet stepping up onto something high. The same kanji gives 登山 (tozan), mountain climbing. 登る is used for climbing mountains, trees and stairs.

登 — 癶 (two feet ascending) + 豆 (ritual vessel)
Originally a pictograph showing two feet (癶) climbing up to present a ritual vessel (豆) on a raised platform. The core meaning was 'to ascend' or 'mount,' as when stepping up to make an offering. From this it broadened to 'rise, climb, record, publish.'
