生 is the kanji for birth and life, read しょう here as in 一生 (isshou, a lifetime). Adding じる turns it into a verb: something gets born, so it arises or occurs. Same pattern as 感じる (to feel) and 信じる (to believe).

Originally a pictograph showing a young plant sprouting from the ground, with 屮 (a sprout) above 土 (earth). The core meaning is 'to be born, to grow, to live,' which extends to 'raw, unripe, unfamiliar.'
