珍しい
めずらしい · mezurashii · JLPT N4 · i-adj
unusual
💎 From old verb mezu (to admire): what is rare is worth admiring
めずらしい grew from the classical verb 愛づ (mezu, to admire, to cherish). Something you seldom meet earns admiration, so the sense shifted to unusual or rare. The kanji 珍 means precious, as in 珍味 (chinmi), a rare delicacy.
