王様

おうさま · ousama · JLPT N3 · noun

king

王様 — king

👑 王 king + 様 sama, the polite title = the honoured king

王 (ō) means king on its own. 様 (sama) is the very polite title used after names, as in お客様 (honoured customer). Put them together and you get the king, said with full respect.

王 — three horizontal strokes 三 + one vertical stroke connecting heaven, earth, and humanity
Originally a pictograph of a large ceremonial axe, a symbol of royal authority in ancient China. The three horizontal lines were later reinterpreted philosophically as heaven, earth, and humanity, with the king as the one who unites them. The meaning shifted from 'axe' to 'king' or 'ruler'.
