特有
とくゆう · tokuyuu · JLPT N1 · na-adj
characteristic
特 (special) + 有 (have): what a thing specially has, its own distinctive trait
Used with の before a noun: 日本特有の文化 means a culture peculiar to Japan. 有 here means possessed by, as in 所有 (ownership).
特 — cow 牛 + temple 寺 (phonetic)
Originally referred to a male bull or large ox, with 牛 'cow' as the meaning component and 寺 supplying the sound. Over time it shifted from 'bull' to 'special, particular, unique,' the sense used today.
有 — hand 𠂇 + moon/meat 月
Originally depicted a hand holding a piece of meat (月 here is the 'meat' radical, not moon), expressing the idea of possessing something. Over time the meaning broadened from 'to hold/possess' to the general sense of 'to have' or 'there is/exists'.
