特売

とくばい · tokubai · JLPT N2 · noun

sale

🏷️ 特売 = 特 (special) + 売 (sell): a special sell-off

Both kanji are common on their own: 特 (toku) means special and 売 (bai) means sell. Read together as tokubai, they give a special sale.

特 — cow 牛 + temple 寺 (phonetic)
Originally referred to a male bull or large ox, with 牛 'cow' as the meaning component and 寺 supplying the sound. Over time it shifted from 'bull' to 'special, particular, unique,' the sense used today.
