片寄る
かたよる · katayoru · JLPT N2 · verb-godan
to incline
片 = one piece, 寄る = drawing near; a lopsided weight drifts toward one side, so it is one-sided
片寄る is 片 (one side, a fragment) + 寄る (to lean toward, draw close). Something that leans to just one side is partial or inclined.
片 — right half of 木 (tree split vertically)
Pictograph showing the right half of a tree 木 split down the middle, depicting a thin slice or slab of wood. From this came the meanings 'slice,' 'flat thin piece,' and by extension 'sheet' or 'card.' Its mirror image 爿 represents the left half.
寄 — roof 宀 + strange 奇 (phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound: the roof radical 宀 suggests a dwelling or shelter, while 奇 (qí) supplies the sound, shifted to jì. The original sense was to lodge or stay temporarily under someone's roof, which extended to entrusting, depositing, and eventually sending or mailing things to another's care.
