煎る

to roast
🫘🔥 煎 = 前 front + 灬 fire: beans held in front of the fire
煎る means dry-roasting without oil, like sesame, beans or tea leaves shaken in a pan over a flame. The four dots 灬 at the bottom are fire. The same 煎 appears in 煎茶 (sencha), the green tea named for this roasting step.
煎 — fire radical 灬 + 前 (qián, phonetic)
煎 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The bottom 灬 is a form of 火 (fire), giving the meaning of cooking with heat, while 前 supplies the sound (qián → jiān). It originally meant to fry or simmer in a small amount of oil or liquid, a sense it still carries today.
