無理
むり · muri · JLPT N4 · na-adj
impossible
無理 = without (無) + reason (理): no logic to it, so it can't be done
無 means none or lacking; 理 is reason or logic, as in 理由 (reason) and 料理. Something with no reason behind it is unreasonable, and by extension impossible. Said alone, むり! means no way, can't do it.
理 — jade radical 玉/王 + village 里 (phonetic)
理 is a semantic-phonetic compound: the jade radical 王 (玉) on the left signals meaning, while 里 on the right gives the sound. It originally meant the natural veins or grain in a piece of jade, then extended to 'pattern,' 'order,' 'principle,' and finally the modern senses 'reason' and 'to manage.'
