済む

すむ · sumu · JLPT N4 · verb-godan

to finish

🏁 sumu sounds like sum: once the sum is done, the job is finished

済 pairs water 氵 with 斉 (even, in order): originally to get across a river, so the crossing is complete. Same sound as 住む (to live) and 澄む (to become clear), but 済む means a matter is settled and over, as in すみません: it is not settled.
