渇く

かわく · kawaku · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to be thirsty

💧 渇く sounds just like 乾く (kawaku, to dry): thirst is a dried-out throat

Both verbs are read kawaku and come from the same root. 渇 has the water radical 氵 on the left, so it means lacking water inside you, while 乾 is for things like laundry drying. Example: のどが渇く, my throat is dry, meaning I'm thirsty.
