泊まる

とまる · tomaru · JLPT N4 · verb-godan

to stay (over night) (v.i.)

🏨 tomaru: stay till TOMorrow — 泊 = water 氵 + white 白, a boat moored overnight

泊 originally meant mooring a boat: water 氵 plus 白 (sound part). A moored boat stays put for the night, so 泊まる = to lodge overnight. Same sound as 止まる (to stop) — you stop, then stay until TOMorrow.
