汗
あせ · ase · JLPT N3 · noun
perspiration
💦 汗 = 氵 water + 干 dry: the water your skin lets out so it can dry
The 氵 radical marks liquids. 干 (kan, dry) also gives the on-reading kan, as in 発汗 hakkan, sweating. For the kun-reading ase, think of a panting runner gasping ah… se… sweaty!
汗 — water radical 氵 + 干 (gān, phonetic)
汗 is a phono-semantic compound. The water radical 氵 signals liquid, and 干 supplies the sound. Together they denote sweat — the water that comes out of the body. Read hàn it means sweat; read hán it appears in 可汗, a loanword for a Mongol or Turkic ruler (khan).
