毎朝

まいあさ · maiasa · JLPT N5 · noun

morning

🌅☕ 毎朝 = 毎 (every) + 朝 (morning): mai + asa

毎 (mai) means every, as in 毎日 mainichi (every day) and 毎週 maishuu (every week). 朝 (asa) is morning, as in 朝ごはん asagohan (breakfast). Swap the second half to build the whole 毎- family of time words.

朝 — 十 + 日 + 十 + 月 (sun rising among grass, moon fading)
Originally a pictograph showing the sun (日) rising among grass or trees with the moon (月) still visible, depicting dawn. The core meaning 'morning' (zhāo) was extended to 'dynasty' or 'court audience' (cháo), since officials gathered before the ruler at daybreak.
