機会

きかい · kikai · JLPT N4 · noun

opportunity

🚪 機会 = 機 (pivotal moment) + 会 (meet): meeting the right moment

機 means a machine, but also a turning point or the right moment, as in 危機 (crisis). 会 means to meet. A chance is the moment you happen to meet. Careful: 機械 (machine) is also read kikai, so the second kanji is what tells them apart.

会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.
