植物

しょくぶつ · shokubutsu · JLPT N3 · noun

plant

植物 — plant

🌱🪴 植物 = to plant (植) + thing (物): a planted thing

植 (shoku) means to plant or set in the ground; 物 (butsu) means thing, as in 動物 (doubutsu, animal = moving thing). So a plant is literally the planted thing, the counterpart of the moving thing.
