柄

え · e · JLPT N3 · noun

sword

柄 — sword

🗡️ 柄 = 木 wood + 丙: the wooden part of a blade or tool that you hold

The 木 (wood) radical is there because handles were traditionally made of wood. 丙 mainly gives the sound, as in the on-reading へい (hei). The short reading え (e) is also found in 柄杓 (hishaku, a ladle), where it means the ladle's handle.

がら · gara · JLPT N3 · noun

form

👘 gara sounds like garish: a loud pattern, a big build, a bold character

柄 is 木 (wood) + 丙, which gives the sound. It first meant the wooden handle of a tool, read え. As がら it means the pattern on cloth, like 花柄 (floral pattern), and also a person's build or character, as in 人柄 (personality).
