東洋
とうよう · touyou · JLPT N3 · noun
east
🌏 東洋 = east + ocean: the lands across the eastern sea
東 means east and 洋 means ocean, so 東洋 is the East beyond the sea, meaning the Orient or Asia. Its opposite is 西洋 (seiyou, west + ocean), the West. Both use the same 洋 that appears in 洋服 (Western clothes).
洋 — water radical 氵 + sheep 羊
洋 combines the water radical 氵 (meaning) with 羊 'sheep' (phonetic, hinting at the sound yáng). Originally it referred to a vast body of water or ocean. Later it extended to mean 'foreign' or 'overseas,' since foreign things came across the ocean.
