のぞむ · nozomu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan
to desire
🌕🔭 nozomu ≈ nose zoom: your nose zooms toward what you wish for
The kanji 望 contains 月 (moon). Its ancient form shows a person on raised ground gazing at the full moon. Japanese uses one word for both: gazing far off and longing for something are 望む.
望 — 亡 (phonetic) + 月 moon + 王 king/standing figure
Originally a pictograph of a person standing on tiptoe gazing at the moon, expressing the idea of looking far into the distance. Over time the figure was reshaped and 亡 was added as a phonetic element. The meaning extended from 'gaze afar' to 'hope for' or 'expect.'
