有機

ゆうき · yuuki · JLPT N3 · na-adj

organic

🌱 有機 = have + mechanism: living things have built-in workings

有 means to have or exist, and 機 means mechanism or machinery. Meiji-era scholars coined 有機 for organic: matter that has a living mechanism, as opposed to 無機 (muki), inorganic, with no mechanism. 有機野菜 means organic vegetables.

有 — hand 𠂇 + moon/meat 月
Originally depicted a hand holding a piece of meat (月 here is the 'meat' radical, not moon), expressing the idea of possessing something. Over time the meaning broadened from 'to hold/possess' to the general sense of 'to have' or 'there is/exists'.
