有名

ゆうめい · yuumei · JLPT N5 · na-adj

famous

🏆 有名 = have (有) + name (名): someone who has a name is famous

有 means to have and 名 means name, so the word literally says having a name. English uses the same idea: a big name, or to make a name for yourself. The reading yuu-mei is the Chinese-derived on-yomi of both kanji.

有 — hand 𠂇 + moon/meat 月
Originally depicted a hand holding a piece of meat (月 here is the 'meat' radical, not moon), expressing the idea of possessing something. Over time the meaning broadened from 'to hold/possess' to the general sense of 'to have' or 'there is/exists'.

名 — evening 夕 + mouth 口
A compound ideograph: in the dark of evening (夕), one cannot recognize others by sight, so the mouth (口) calls out a name to identify oneself. The original sense of 'name' broadened to include reputation, fame, and a measure word for people.
