有利

ゆうり · yuuri · JLPT N3 · na-adj

advantageous

💰 有利 = have + profit: holding the profit means you have the edge

有 means to have or exist, and 利 means profit or benefit, as in 利益. Having the benefit on your side makes your position advantageous. Its opposite is 不利 (furi), meaning disadvantageous.

有 — hand 𠂇 + moon/meat 月
Originally depicted a hand holding a piece of meat (月 here is the 'meat' radical, not moon), expressing the idea of possessing something. Over time the meaning broadened from 'to hold/possess' to the general sense of 'to have' or 'there is/exists'.

利 — grain 禾 + knife 刂
Originally a pictograph showing a knife (刂) cutting grain (禾), depicting harvest. From the idea of a sharp blade reaping crops, it extended to mean 'sharp,' then 'benefit,' 'profit,' or 'advantage' — the gain that comes from a successful harvest.
