普段
ふだん · fudan · JLPT N3 · na-adj
usually
👕 普段 = ordinary (普) + level (段): life at its usual level
It was first written 不断, unbroken or constant, and what goes on without a break is what you do ordinarily. You will see it in 普段着, everyday clothes. Sound hook: fudan sounds like food on, as in the usual food you put on the table.
段 — left component 𠂉 + right component 殳 (weapon/strike)
段 originally depicted striking or hammering a piece of stone or metal with a tool, shown by the 殳 'strike' element on the right. From this 'hammering/forging' sense it extended to mean a section or segment cut off, and today it commonly means a paragraph, stage, or piece.
