日の入り

ひのいり · hinoiri · JLPT N2 · noun

sunset

🌇 日 (sun) + の (of) + 入り (entering) = the sun entering, going down below the horizon

日 is sun and 入り means entering or going in. The sun goes in below the horizon. Its opposite is 日の出, sun coming out, which is sunrise.

日 — pictograph of the sun
日 is a pictograph of the sun, originally drawn as a circle with a dot or stroke inside representing the sun's substance. Over time the round shape was squared off into the modern rectangular form. It means 'sun' and by extension 'day'.

入 — single pictograph, two slanting strokes
入 is a pictograph showing an arrowhead or pointed entrance, with two strokes converging downward to suggest something going inward. The original sense was 'to enter,' and it still carries that meaning today. It contrasts visually with 人 (person), where the strokes cross differently at the top.
