旅行
りょこう · ryokou · JLPT N5 · noun
trip
🧳✈️ 旅行 = 旅 (journey) + 行 (go): a journey you go on
旅 means journey, as in 旅館 (ryokan, a traveller's inn). 行 means go, read こう here as in 銀行 (ginkou). Ryo-kou: the ryo of ryokan plus the go-kanji gives going on a journey, i.e. travel or a trip.
行 — crossroads pictograph (left 彳 + right 亍)
行 originally pictured a four-way crossroads in oracle bone script, with two paths meeting. From 'road' it extended to 'walk, go, travel,' and then to 'a row, line' or 'business firm' (read háng). The two halves 彳 and 亍 are the split sides of that ancient crossroads.
