方面
ほうめん · houmen · JLPT N2 · noun
direction
🧭 方 (direction) + 面 (face, surface) = a surface facing one way: an area or aspect
方 means direction or side, and 面 means face or surface. Together they name one side of something, so the word covers both a direction and an area. Often used as 〜の方面 for a field or region.
方 — pictograph of a plow or two boats joined side by side
方 originated as a pictograph, traditionally interpreted as a plow handle or two boats lashed together. From the idea of paired boats it extended to mean 'side by side,' then 'square,' 'direction,' and 'region.' It was later borrowed for the abstract sense of 'method' or 'way.'
面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
