料金
りょうきん · ryoukin · JLPT N3 · noun
fee
💴🎫 料金 = charge (料) + money (金): the money you are charged
料 is 米 rice + 斗 a measuring ladle: grain measured out to set a price. It is the same 料 as in 手数料 (handling fee) and 無料 (free of charge). Add 金 money and you get the fee you pay, such as a bus fare.
料 — rice 米 + dipper 斗
料 combines 米 (rice/grain) with 斗 (a measuring dipper), depicting the act of measuring out grain. From this concrete sense it extended to 'to measure, estimate, anticipate' and to 'materials' (things measured out for use), as in 材料 'materials' and 预料 'to anticipate'.
金 — roof 亼 + two dots (metal nuggets) + earth 土
Originally a pictograph of metal nuggets buried in the earth beneath a covering, with the two dots representing pieces of ore. It first meant 'metal' broadly, then narrowed to 'gold' as the most precious metal, and by extension 'money'.
