文脈

ぶんみゃく · bunmyaku · JLPT N2 · noun

context

📜 文 (text) + 脈 (vein): the vein running through a text is its context

The 脈 in 文脈 also appears in 山脈 (mountain range) and 動脈 (artery). Each names a continuous line running through something, like the thread that links sentences so their meaning flows.

文 — pictograph of crossed lines on a chest
文 originally depicted a person with patterns or tattoos drawn on the chest, shown as crossed or interwoven lines. From this image of decorative markings, it came to mean 'pattern,' then 'writing,' 'script,' and 'literature' or 'culture.' The modern senses all trace back to the idea of meaningful marks.
