文房具

ぶんぼうぐ · bunbougu · JLPT N2 · noun

stationery

✏️ 文 writing + 房 room + 具 tools = the writing room's tools, i.e. stationery

文房 (bunbou) was a scholar's study, the room for writing and brushwork. 具 means tool or implement, so 文房具 is what goes in that room: stationery.

文 — pictograph of crossed lines on a chest
文 originally depicted a person with patterns or tattoos drawn on the chest, shown as crossed or interwoven lines. From this image of decorative markings, it came to mean 'pattern,' then 'writing,' 'script,' and 'literature' or 'culture.' The modern senses all trace back to the idea of meaningful marks.
