文化
ぶんか · bunka · JLPT N4 · noun
culture
🎭🏮 文化 = writing/letters (文) + transform (化): changed by learning
文 means writing or the arts, 化 means to change or transform. Culture is what transforms people through letters and learning. Same 化 as in 化学 (chemistry, the study of change), and bun is the reading of 文 in 文学 (literature).
文 — pictograph of crossed lines on a chest
文 originally depicted a person with patterns or tattoos drawn on the chest, shown as crossed or interwoven lines. From this image of decorative markings, it came to mean 'pattern,' then 'writing,' 'script,' and 'literature' or 'culture.' The modern senses all trace back to the idea of meaningful marks.
化 — person 亻 + spoon/upside-down person 匕
化 is an associative compound showing a standing person 亻 next to 匕, originally a depiction of a person turned upside-down. Together they suggest a figure transforming from one state to another, giving the core meaning 'change' or 'transform'. The character later extended to senses like 'convert', 'influence', and the noun suffix '-ization'.
