散らす

ちらす · chirasu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to scatter

🍂 Same root as chirashi sushi: toppings scattered over rice

散 means scatter, as in 散歩 (a walk, literally scattered steps). Chirashi (散らし) is the noun form of chirasu, so chirashi sushi is literally scattered sushi. Know the dish and you know the verb.

散 — 月 (meat) + 攵 (action) + 卄 (hemp fibers)
Originally depicted beating hemp fibers apart with a stick, with 月 (meat/flesh) added later. The core image of separating or scattering things gave rise to meanings like 'scatter,' 'disperse,' and 'loose/leisurely.' The 攵 component signals an action done by hand.
