放れる

はなれる · hanareru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan

to leave

🎈🕊️ 放 = release, as in 放す hanasu (let go); 放れる = to be let go, break free

放 is the release kanji, also in 解放 kaihō (liberation). 放す hanasu is letting something go; 放れる hanareru is the thing itself coming loose. The more common 離れる (same reading) means moving apart in distance.

放 — 方 (square/phonetic) + 攵 (rap/strike radical)
放 is a semantic-phonetic compound: 方 supplies the sound and 攵 (a hand holding a stick) supplies the meaning of striking or driving away. The original sense was to banish or drive out, which broadened over time to 'release', 'let go', and 'put down'.
