攻撃
こうげき · kougeki · JLPT N3 · noun
attack
⚔️👊 攻 (assault) + 撃 (strike); kou-geki sounds like go-get-'em!
攻 means to attack or lay siege, as in 攻める (semeru). 撃 means to strike or fire, as in 撃つ (utsu). Put together, assault + strike means attack, and kou-geki is close to the battle cry go get 'em.
攻 — 工 (gōng, phonetic) + 攵 (strike/action)
A semantic-phonetic compound: 攵 (a hand holding a stick) gives the meaning of striking or attacking, while 工 supplies the sound. Originally meaning to attack militarily, it later extended to 'work on' or 'study intensively,' as in 攻读.
