損害

そんがい · songai · JLPT N3 · noun

damage

💥 損害 = loss (損) + harm (害): damage that costs you

損 is loss, as in 損失 (sonshitsu, loss). 害 is harm, as in 被害 (higai, being harmed). Loss plus harm gives damage. The sound so-n-gai also fits a verbal hook: so gone, guy, it is all damaged.

害 — 宀 roof + 丯 (phonetic) + 口 mouth
Originally an ideograph showing harm spoken under a roof, with 宀 (roof/house) on top, a phonetic element 丯 in the middle, and 口 (mouth) below suggesting harmful speech. Over time it shifted from 'injury caused by words' to the broader senses of 'harm,' 'injure,' and 'fear.'
