接ぐ

つぐ · tsugu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to join

🧩🦴 tsugu sounds like two-go: two pieces go together as one

The kanji 接 has the hand radical 扌, a hand joining things. The same kanji is in 接続 (setsuzoku, connection). Its homophone 継ぐ (tsugu) means to inherit or carry on, so both are about linking one thing to the next.

接 — hand 扌 + concubine 妾 (phonetic)
接 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The hand radical 扌 carries the meaning of receiving or joining with the hand, while 妾 supplies the sound. From 'taking with the hand' it broadened to 'receive, meet, connect, join together'.
