振り向く

ふりむく · furimuku · JLPT N2 · verb-godan

to turn around

🔄 振 (shake/swing) + 向く (face toward): swing your face back toward something, i.e. turn around

振る means to swing or wave, and 向く means to face a direction. Together they describe swinging your face around to look back the way you came.

向 — roof 宀 + mouth 口
Originally a pictograph of a house with a north-facing window, showing an opening in a wall under a roof. The early meaning was 'north window,' which extended to 'the direction something faces,' then broadly to 'toward' or 'direction.' The modern shape simplified the window into 口.
